Background of the Study
Students with disabilities face numerous challenges in higher education, ranging from physical access to educational materials to difficulties in interacting with standard technological tools. These challenges can hinder their academic performance and overall university experience. The University of Abuja, located in Gwagwalada LGA, FCT Abuja, has recognized these challenges and aims to provide an inclusive learning environment by integrating AI-powered assistive technologies.

Assistive technologies, such as screen readers, speech-to-text applications, and AI-powered tools, can support students with visual, hearing, and mobility impairments. These technologies use machine learning algorithms and natural language processing to adapt to individual needs, providing personalized assistance. AI can play a significant role in enhancing the accessibility of educational resources, fostering a more inclusive learning environment, and improving academic outcomes for students with disabilities.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the advances in technology, students with disabilities at the University of Abuja still face significant barriers in accessing educational content and participating fully in academic activities. Traditional assistive technologies often fail to meet the diverse needs of students with various disabilities. There is a lack of effective AI-powered assistive technologies that can adapt to the unique requirements of each student, hindering their ability to perform well in academic settings.

Objectives of the Study

1. To explore the potential of AI-powered assistive technologies for improving the academic experience of students with disabilities at the University of Abuja.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing assistive technologies in meeting the needs of students with disabilities at the university.

3. To recommend AI-driven solutions that could improve accessibility and inclusivity for students with disabilities at the University of Abuja.

Research Questions

1. What AI-powered assistive technologies can be developed to meet the needs of students with disabilities at the University of Abuja?

2. How effective are existing assistive technologies in improving the academic experience of students with disabilities?

3. What are the challenges in implementing AI-based assistive technologies at the University of Abuja?

Research Hypotheses

1. AI-powered assistive technologies will significantly enhance the academic experience of students with disabilities at the University of Abuja.

2. Existing assistive technologies are insufficient in meeting the diverse needs of students with disabilities at the university.

3. The implementation of AI-powered assistive technologies will face challenges related to infrastructure, training, and adoption at the University of Abuja.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into how AI-powered assistive technologies can support students with disabilities in higher education, specifically at the University of Abuja. The findings will contribute to the development of inclusive education policies and strategies that ensure all students, regardless of their disabilities, have equal opportunities to succeed academically.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the use of AI-powered assistive technologies for students with disabilities at the University of Abuja, located in Gwagwalada LGA, FCT Abuja. The study is limited to evaluating existing assistive technologies and exploring potential AI-based solutions within the university’s infrastructure.
